Ethos and pedestrian safety
At Seven Steps Childcare, we believe that when we take the time to slow down and travel on foot, we open up a world of discovery for children. Walking allows them to be in the elements, observe the changing seasons in real time, and connect with nature while benefiting their physical health and emotional well-being.
- The benefits of walking: Our primary method of transport is walking. This slow travel approach gives children the space to be curious about their surroundings, allowing them to observe wildlife and nature without the rush of a vehicle.
- Active travel: Depending on the age and stage of the children, we incorporate the use of bicycles and scooters to build physical confidence and coordination. Safety helmets are mandatory, and children must follow instructions regarding speed and stopping.
- Public transport: We use local bus services to access community facilities. This helps children develop an awareness of their community and learn how to travel responsibly on public vehicles.
- Taxis: We do not use taxis for routine transport. In an emergency, if a vehicle is required, we only use Northumberland County Council approved transport providers.
- Safety seats and restraints: If private vehicle use is introduced in the future, we would likely ask parents to provide their child's own car seat for planned journeys to ensure the seat is perfectly adjusted to the individual child's height and weight.
Future vehicle use
While we are licensed drivers, Seven Steps Childcare will be a walking-only setting during its initial opening phase. We intend to introduce the use of private car transport in the future as the setting evolves.
- Transition to driving: Before using private vehicles to transport children, we will update this policy and provide parents with evidence of business insurance, a valid MOT certificate, and driving licences.
- Car safety and seating: If vehicle transport is introduced, parents will be asked to provide an age-appropriate car seat on the day of the journey. We will ensure all parent-provided seats are fitted correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions and UK law.
- Storage: Due to limited storage space, car seats should be provided on the day of a planned journey and taken home at the end of the session.
- Safe driving protocol: We will maintain records of the vehicle, driver, and insurance. Once introduced, we will adhere to all road laws, ensure children are never left unattended, and maintain a log of all car journeys and occupants.
Procedures for journeys
We follow strict protocols to manage risks and ensure parents are fully informed of all travel arrangements.
- Parental consent: We obtain written consent from parents or carers before taking children on any journey involving public transport, bicycles/scooters, or travel away from the immediate local area.
- Records of journeys: We maintain a log of significant journeys, including the date, destination, method of transport, and a list of all participants.
- Emergency transport: If an emergency requires immediate vehicle transport, we will contact emergency services or a council-approved taxi service. Parents will be notified immediately.
- Accident and breakdown procedure: Whether on foot or in a vehicle, we maintain a clear plan for emergencies. This includes carrying a mobile phone, a first aid kit, and emergency contact details for all children.
Developing road awareness
We use our daily journeys as an opportunity for well-managed risk-taking, helping children develop age-appropriate traffic safety skills.
- Traffic safety: We actively teach children the Green Cross Code (Stop, Look, Listen, Think) and how to identify safe crossing points.
- Danger detectives: We encourage children to be "danger detectives" during our walks and rides. This involves identifying potential hazards, such as hidden driveways or busy junctions, and discussing how to manage those risks.
- Risk management: This approach allows children to identify and manage risks in a controlled environment, building their confidence and safety skills for the future.
